GURGAON: Only around 11% of the legacy waste at Bandhwari has been processed in three months. Haryana chief secretary Sanjeev Kaushal on Thursday directed
MCG officials to expedite processing and treat the remaining waste in six months by September as per the deadline fixed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) committee.
The chief secretary also directed MCG commissioner PC Meena to submit a report on new sites to divert the city’s daily waste by April 21. Kaushal gave the directions while he chaired a meeting of the NGT committee with MCG and MCF officials in Chandigarh on Thursday.
MCG said a total of 3.6 lakh tonnes of legacy waste was processed from January to March this year, while around 27.9 lakh tonnes still remains.
“There are primarily two reasons for the slow pace of waste processing. The first is that the tender process took time, due to which a few companies could not start the work. One of the private firms started work in March and we are already processing 8,000 tonnes of legacy waste every day,” Meena told TOI.
He added, “The second reason was the unexpected rains, due to which processing slowed down. The weather is clear now. We are aiming to process 10,500 tonnes per day in April,” he added.
When the discussion of the daily waste disposal started in the meeting, the MCG commissioner said the sites the corporation had so far identified for diverting it from the landfill could not be finalised due to protests by the public. On this, the chief secretary asked the commissioner to visit two proposed sites and submit a report within the next seven days.
