Delhi Government stops power subsidy to 46 lakh consumers,  blames LG Saxena for delay

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday made an announcement that the power subsidy that benefits around 46 lakh consumers in Delhi will cease, starting from today. Delhi Power Minister Atishi Marlena announced during a press conference and blamed the Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena for not clearing the file to extend the subsidy, which is because such decision has been taken.

Post Marlena’s press conference, LG Saxena cleared the pending file by marking it approved.

She also said, from next Monday onwards consumers will receive inflated bills that would exclude subsidy.

The minister stated the reason behind cancelling the subsidy is because the Delhi government plans to continue its subsidy next year but the file of the same is with LG Saxena and until it does not come back with the approval, the decision remains standstill.

Marlena claimed that she had requested for a five-minute appointment with LG Saxena to discuss about the file but there was no response from the other side. She added that despite the urgency of the issue, she did not get an appointment from the LG office.

ANI reported LG Saxena’s take on this which said the Power Minister to refrain making any such statement in public and misleading people, LG claimed that when the deadline was of 15th April then why the file reached his office on 11th April.

The Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi currently provides 200 units free electricity to the consumers for a monthly consumption, the consumers having more than 200 units usage they receive a 50 percent subsidy for up to 400 units.

Last year, CM Kejriwal announced a power subsidy, to be provided to those consumers only who apply it. As per the official data more than 48 lakh consumers have applied for the same.

The AAP government that presented its budget 2023-24 in March 2023, allocated Rs 3250 crore towards power subsidy for the National Capital.
