Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and Rapido have come together to launch bike taxi services by women, for women. As a step to empower women, provide employment to them and offer secure commutes to women travelers to the last mile, the first-ever women-driven bike taxi services were launched in the state on Thursday.

According to CRML officials, this initiative will promote sustainable transportation options and enhance customer experience, adding to the ongoing efforts of the government.

Around 50 women’s bike taxis will be made available at five metro stations in Chennai for now, which include Thousand Lights, Teynampet, Egmore, Saidapet, and Government Estate. The services will be extended to other metro stations based on demand and need. The bikes will have women captains and will be available exclusively for metro rail passengers.

Rajesh Chaturvedi, Director of Systems and Operations, of Chennai Metro waved a green flag to the services on April 14th at Nandanam metro station. S Satheesh Prabhu, the Assistant General Manager (Rolling Stock), along with Rapido officials and some staff members of the Chennai metro rail were also present during the inauguration.

The bike services are not only for women, both men and women can book the bikes using an app. According to the officials, bike taxis are becoming a popular choice as they are affordable compared to the high fares charged by autos and other cab companies. They are also helpful in speeding up the commute during peak traffic hours.

In 2022, CMRL also introduced Uber Auto and Rapido bike taxi services in 22 metro stations. Chennai metros offer MTC small buses, CMRL bicycles, smart bike rental bicycles, and e-bikes as well in many stations, which make last-mile connectivity easier.

Sivasubramaniam Jayaraman, from Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP-Inida), promoted this campaign and said more e-bikes should be introduced as people are more encouraged to use public transport when they offer last-mile connectivity.
