AHMEDABAD: A nun from Vadodara has approached the Gujarat high court for registration of FIR and action against an unidentified speaker for allegedly making derogatory remarks on nuns and the Pope during an event organised in Kadi town by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
The nun from Vadodara, Manjula Tuscano has stated in her petition filed through advocate Utkarsh Dave that 100 nuns had on March 28 made representations to the police authorities of Mehsana district demanding criminal action against the speaker, who is seen in a viral video giving hate speech against the Christians. But the cops have not acted in accordance with the law.
The petitioner has stated that the speaker is seen exhorting the listeners to take the Christian community to the task and to excommunicate them from Gujarat. The meeting took place last month in Kadi and the speaker was referring to a convent in Irana village. "The said video is in circulation over the social media and public domain, the individual in his speech could be seen additionally seen making several derogatory and vile comments specifically targeted towards women mocking the chastity of nuns/sisters and making insinuations against his holiness the Pope," the petition reads.
It has been contended that the speaker is promoting communal hatred and discrimination. His statement clearly encourages separatism and hatred towards Christians and minorities, which is against India’s national interest. This is a testament of an act done with a predetermination of causing disruption in the religious harmony of the state, and any indolence on part of the authorities to act on the complaint "only reflects the failure of the State in curbing anti-social elements".
In representations made before various authorities, the community leaders said that the speech in Gujarati language makes sexually explicit references to the pope and nuns and the speaker said that the pope is the husband of thousands of nuns the world over because nuns during their initiation ceremony need to accept him so.
Advocate Dave said that the petition is likely to come up for the hearing next week.
