NAGPUR: Flaying the Indian educated class for discriminating between the menial work and white collared jobs, Maharashtra governor Ramesh Bais on Thursday said the pan shop owners and rickshaw pullers earn money, but our graduates remain unemployed as they do not want to do petty works.
Addressing students at Nagpur University’s 110th convocation, Bais said in countries like New Zealand, Australia and West Indies, the former cricketers do all kinds of jobs, including as a cabbie and at grocery shops. “In India, we carry a negative mindset about such jobs. It is precisely the reason, our graduates often complain of not getting jobs.”
Advising the universities to be more sensitive towards the students’ needs, he said those should always be student centric. “As a chancellor, I received many complaints from the students that they were getting degrees very late. They want it to secure admissions in institutions abroad. The university administration should help them out in such emergencies.”
Emphasizing that the increasing number of cybercrimes was becoming one of the most serious issues faced by the society, Bais said the youths and students were more vulnerable as they used tablets, mobile handsets and laptops. “All colleges should have cyber cells that should spread awareness about this.”
Applauding that NU was celebrating its centenary year, the chancellor said it had established few famous departments like law, pharmacy and mass communication and also colleges like Laxminarayan Institute of Technology (LIT).
“When nations like Japan, Germany, Italy, France and Romania were getting older, India became the youngest nation with an average age of 29 years. These countries are looking at us for providing them skilled manpower.”
Informing that the Maharashtra government would implement New Education Policy (NEP) from next academic session, the governor hoped that NU would set new trends after it. “The NEP would create a new generation that will uphold such ethical, Indian values. NU should enter into a pact with Maharashtra Skill Development University to make students more skillful.”
