BHUBANESWAR: Odisha on Thursday literally found its place in the sun as three of its towns found themselves among the top-15 hottest places in the world with Baripada - the district headquarters town of Mayurbhanj in north Odisha - taking the top slot at 43.5 degree Celsius.
The result, published by eldoradoweather.com, a global weather forecasting site, also has Angul (42.5°C) in sixth place and Titlagarh (42.2) in Balangir district in 11th position. Chandrapur (43.2°C) in
Maharashtra ranked second in the hottest scale followed by Kolda (43°) in Senegal.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Sonepur and Boudh also recorded temperature of 42.5°C, though these did not find mention in the report. Most places in the state witnessed hot weather conditions with mercury hovering above 40 degrees in at least 25 towns.
State capital Bhubaneswar recorded a maximum of 40.8°C while Cuttack's highest day temperature was 41.4°, each about three degrees above from normal.
An IMD forecast said there is unlikely to be any relief from such rising trend in the mercury level for another two days. The day temperature during this period may see a rise by another three degrees at many places in the interior districts of the state.
