"Jo kahate hain, woh kar dikhaate hain..." (He does what he says), tweeted BJP's UP unit with a video of CM Yogi Adityanath's recent Vidhan Sabha speech vowing to decimate the mafia into dust.
However, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav called Thursday's incident a "fake encounter" and accused the state government of working against the spirit of communal amity. BSP chief Mayawati sought a probe into the shootout.
BJP minister Swatantra Dev Singh hit back, "Whenever there is an attack on a criminal, terrorist, mafia, then a person (referring to Yadav) stands in their support." Gaurav Bhatia, BJP national spokesman, said, "Today, when a criminal was killed, the public is happy, but there is mourning in the SP. Why after all? Don't see a criminal through the prism of religion."
Maya seeks probe
BSP supremo Mayawati, too, sought a probe into the police action.
In a tweet, Akhilesh Yadav said the current regime does not believe in court and judicial processes. "All encounters should be thoroughly investigated, and the culprits should not be spared. Power does not give the right to decide what is right or wrong," he said. Accusing the BJP government in UP of working against the spirit of communal amity, Akhilesh said that encounters were being staged to divert the attention of the public from the real issues.
Later, while talking to reporters in Indore, Akhilesh Yadav referred to gangster Vikas Dubey's killing in an encounter in 2020 and said: "In Uttar Pradesh, a car turns turtle after it leaves Madhya Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh has become a 'fake encounter Pradesh'. Officials, under the pressure of the current regime and in order to remain in their post, continue to take risks and execute such (encounter) operations."
Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati took to Twitter, saying: "Various kind of talks are going on after the killing of Atiq Ahmed's son and his aide in a police encounter on Thursday. There is a feeling among the general public that their apprehension that the Vikas Dubey episode will be repeated has come true. Therefore, a high-level inquiry is necessary so that complete facts and truth of the incident can come before the public."
