Caught 'breaking into' Powai restaurant, man attacks cop with knife
Prashant Dhuri
MUMBAI: A police constable was attacked with a knife on the chest as he tried to help another cop nab a man allegedly caught trying to break into a restaurant in Powai on Wednesday. The cop, Prashant Dhuri (32), has been administered five sutures.
It was after 3am that the alleged assailant, Subrato Das (28), was trying to break into the restaurant when a traffic cop, Ravindra Jadhav, who was on night patrol duty caught him red handed, the police said. Just as the traffic cop was grabbing Das, he set himself free and fled.
Another constable, who was also at the spot, chased Das for 400 metres before he entered an under-construction site near L&T gate in the wee hours on Wednesday.
That's when constable, Prashant Dhuri caught hold of Das who whipped out a knife and attacked constable Dhuri, said the police. By then, the two cops had alerted other colleagues on duty who reached the spot. Das was taken into custody. After that, constable Dhuri was taken to hospital for first-aid. He has been rewarded for his bravery.
Deputy commissioner of police Maheshwar Reddy said Das is a history-sheeter.
