Vadodara: A woman who had been chained to a wooden post by her parents at their home for years finally cut free of her fetters, thanks to an NGO from Bhavka village in Dahod district.
The family of the 25-year-old woman with learning difficulties kept her in the extreme condition for seven long years, said a social worker from Dahod who learnt about the woman and informed the Jay Ambe Mandbuddhi Mahila Samaj Seva Trust in Bayad in Aravalli district.
Volunteers from the trust soon reached Dahod and rescued the woman, frail and weak.
President of the trust, Ashok Jain said that they were informed by Sandhya Bhuriya, a social worker, about the plight of the chained woman. “After living in that severe condition for about seven years, we have now brought her to our facility in Bayad, where she will get medical treatment,” said Jain.
According to Jain, the woman who studied up to Class 12 had also got her admission in a nursing course. “Later, she started having psychiatric problems and behaving abnormally. Her parents kept her chained as she would throw stones at times,” said Jain, adding that lack of awareness about her mental condition, which he believed was treatable, led people to torture her thus.
Jain said that the woman’s parents were old and her brother stayed elsewhere with his family. “Her mother had to remain hospitalized due to a prolonged illness. The mother has been brought home now, but her condition is serious,”
Jain added.
