Yavapai County sheriff warns of kidnapping scam calls
Yavapai County authorities are cautioning residents after a woman reported a kidnapping scam attempt of her 8-year-old daughter.
The incident took place Monday morning in Prescott Valley when a mother called 911 and reported a man had called her stating he had kidnapped her daughter when she was waiting for the school bus, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
The mother said the man, speaking in Spanish, demanded money in exchange for the safety of her daughter. Then he put what sounded like a little girl on the phone, the Sheriff's Office said.
The caller attempted to get the family members to bring him money at a local Walmart before the mother hung up on him and called 911, according to the Sheriff's Office news release. The child was confirmed to be safe at school and told deputies that no one had approached her before or during school.
Deputies were unable to track the suspect down as the phone number listed did not exist, the Sheriff's Office said.
A similar call was made in March in Black Canyon City when a man speaking English made similar threats and demanded money, but the person did not have any children so was able to identify it as a scam right away, the Sheriff's Office said.
No other similar reports had been made, according to the Sheriff's Office, and an investigation was underway.
