Ludhiana: For the residents of Kailash Nagar in city’s ward number 6, waterlogged roads and foul smell have become an integral part of their day. For almost four years now, the open sewers have been overflowing here, filling the surroundings with an almost unbearable stench.
With residents have been continuously asking the municipal corporation to revamp the sewerage system here for over four years now, the civic body has maintained that they will soon resolve the issue. While MC delays the work, the daily life of many residents has been affected.
Residents considering shifting elsewhereWith stench a daily issue in Kailash Nagar, many residents rued that even their relatives tend to maintain a distance with them, with many refusing to visit their houses.
Rohit Kumar, who lives here, asks, “Can anybody imagine living in such conditions when there’s a filthy smell all around most of the time? We are living in such conditions.” He says the issue worsens during the monsoon, and the civic body doesn’t seem to care.
“Are people living here not human beings?” asks Rohit.
He, like many others, are considering to shift out of Kailash Nagar if the problem isn’t resolved.
A childhood snatchedResidents of Kailash Nagar are not just missing out on meeting their distant relatives, but also their childhood.
With filthy sewer water filling the roads and stench in the air, the kids in Kailash Nagar are not allowed to play outside.
Area resident Kanta Rani shares how they are forced to keep their kids inside the houses. “The streets are full of sewer water. The children can fall in the filthy water or some other incident can take place. Apart from this, some serious health ailment can trouble people living here.”
Hitting out against the authorities, she asks whether they should wait for the issue to be resolved or shift somewhere else.
Empty efforts, false promisesOver the last four years, many politicians the residents promised to get the sewers revamped, but to no use.
Preet Saini said, “The tenure of previous government ended; the new government also completed one year but our issue is still the same. If the authorities can’t even provide basic facilities, what else is to be expected of them?” She demanded action against those delaying the work.
