Foxtail orchids popularly known as "Kopou Ful" in Assamese are an integral part of the state's culture, designated as the state flower of Assam in 2003. In places like Sivasagar district, the flower is grown on roadsides with pride and care but recent incidents of it being stolen has upset citizens. It's not known who has been plucking the ornamental flowers but villagers have now started keeping a vigil to protect the orchids. These flowers are considered an embodiment of the spirit of love and fertility and have traditionally been a part of wedding ceremonies in Assam. They are also integral to the state's annual cultural festival, Rongali Bihu, which will be celebrated this year on April 14.
