Mumbai sees 274 new Covid-19 cases

Mumbai on Thursday reported 274 COVID-19 cases, which took the tally to 11,59,819, while the death toll stood unchanged at 19,752, a civic official said. The addition to the tally was a drop from the 320 cases reported on Wednesday, the first time the 300-mark was breached since September last year. (PTI)

A radiologist with a prominent hospital in Bandra in Mumbai was duped of Rs 1.22 lakh allegedly on the promise of profits in share trading, a police official said on Thursday. "The accused asked the radiologist to invest Rs 8,000 in share trading, then took Rs 25,000 and continued taking money from the victim. After she had spent Rs 1.22 lakh, the radiologist realised she had been cheated," he said. (PTI)

In a major relief to motorists, flyover at Chheda nagar and a east-west arm of Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) was inaugurated by chief minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday. A total of three flyovers were planned at Chheda nagar. Of this, an elevated road which connects existing North-South Chheda Nagar flyover to Amar Mahal flyover was opened in March 2022. Another 600 metre long South-North flyover at Chheda nagar will be opened in December.

Bombay HC extends interim protection from arrest to Hasan Mushrif till April 27 in ED case

Hasan Mushrif, the former minister and NCP leader, got a reprieve from the Bombay high court on Thursday as it extended his interim protection against any coercive action till April 27. The single judge bench of Justice Anuja Prabhudessai adjourned the hearing of his plea for pre-arrest bail as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) sought time to file its reply.

History sheeter held in Thane for chain snatching

A man allegedly involved in several chain snatching incidents in Thane district and adjoining areas was arrested, a police official said on Thursday. The arrest of the 23-year-old man, part of the infamous "Irani gang" here, has led to the solving of eight cases registered in Kapurbawadi, Naupada and Kalwa police stations, Crime Branch senior inspector Vikas Ghodke said. He said 70 grams of gold worth Rs 4.5 lakh had been recovered from the accused. (PTI)

Mumbai: Man held for marrying minor girlfriend by falsely showing her as adult

A youth has been arrested for allegedly marrying his minor girlfriend after getting her date of birth on her Aadhaar Card corrected to show she is an adult, a Mumbai police official said on Thursday. As per the complaint filed by the girl's father at Dahisar police station, she was born on May 7, 2006 but the accused got it changed to March 12, 2004 on her Aadhaar card, the official said. (PTI)

Mumbai Police arrest 2 foreigners for exchanging boarding passes to travel to different countries

The Mumbai Police have arrested a Sri Lankan native and a German citizen after they allegedly exchanged their boarding passes at the airport here to travel to London and Kathmandu respectively, an official said on Thursday. The incident took place on Monday at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport here.The 22-year-old Sri Lankan citizen, who was travelling on a fake passport, and the 36-year-old German native had exchanged their boarding passes in a toilet at the airport for travelling to London and Kathmandu, the official said.

Police have arrested one more person in a case of murder of a person 15 years ago in Maharashtra's Palghar district, taking the total number of those taken into custody to three, officials said on Thursday. The latest arrest was made on Tuesday from Mira Bhayander area in neighbouring Thane district, while two brothers were nabbed last month from Uttarakhand, they said.On the morning of December 13, 2007, the body of a man was found with 30-35 stab wounds along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway, within the limits of Manickpur police station in Vasai.

Residents of Patra Chawl to get rent arrears from 2018

The state government has approved payment of rent arrears to 672 residents of Patra Chawl from January 2018 to February 2022. They will be paid Rs 25,000 per month for the period.The earlier Maha Vikas Aghadi government had agreed to pay rent from March 2022 when Mhada took over redevelopment of the project. Residents, though, had persisted with their demand for rent arrears. The ShindeFadnavis government had even announced that rent arrears would be paid to tenants of redevelopment projects that had stalled for years.Last month, a meeting was held between the residents’ association and Mhada officials where residents agreed to accept rent from the time the developer had been removed by Mhada, that is, from January 2018. They even submitted a copy of the resolution to Mhada.

Uddhav Thackeray asks Sharad Pawar to speak at Mumbai rally; Cong neta to visit

Amid reports of differences in the Maha Vikas Aghadi, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray has requested NCP president Sharad Pawar to address the joint MVA rally to be held in Mumbai on May 1, whileCongress leader K C Venugopal is scheduled to meet Thackeray at Matoshree. It is likely Pawar will address the rally.Thackeray met Pawar on Tuesday evening at the latter’s Silver Oak residence in South Mumbai. The MVA began its series of rallies with one in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar two weeks ago. The second rally is in Nagpur on April 16, and it will be followed by the Mumbai rally. ASena (UBT) functionary said there have been reports about a rift in MVA in the wake of NCP’s opposition to a joint parliamentary committee probe into allegations against the Adani Group and Rahul Gandhi’s comments on Veer Savarkar. “There was talk of MVA unity at the Pawar-Uddhav meeting so to take things forward and send a message of unity Uddhavji has requested Pawar address the joint MVA rally in Mumbai. Pawar’s speech would be seen as his political message and demonstrate unity against BJP,” the functionary said.

HIV+ report given sans counselling drives father of 2 to despair

A 51-year-old man from central Mumbai has accused a private diagnostic chain of causing him immense mental agony by delivering an HIV-positive report by email. As the father of two daughters, the news that arrived without any counselling, as mandated by law, overwhelmed him with panic and pushed him to the brink of self-harm.According to the HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Cont-rol) Act, 2017, HIV testing can only be performed with informed consent, which includes a pre-test and post-test counselling. The National Aids Control Organisation rules further require positive tests to be confirmed and the patient linked with a treatment centre.
