While BJP leaders continued to laud Uttar Pradesh Police’s massive achievement after they gunned down gangster turned politician Atique Ahmed’s son Asad, CPI(M) leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Brinda Karat on April 13 chastised the “politically motivated” encounter citing that such killings have no place in the legal framework of India. While speaking to ANI, Brinda Karat said, “Very often in the name of encounter, the police just go ahead and shoots the criminal who they are looking for. According to law of this country, a criminal and the crime that is committed has a framework, that is to arrest the man. Give him the strictest of punishment but encounter killings are something which have no place within a legal frame work of India. The so called killings of UP government shown to be one sided killings of the Police.”
