GURGAON: Temperatures are expected to rise up to 40 degrees Celsius in the next few days, but the weather may turn once again. The city may witness rains between April 17 and 19 due to an approaching western disturbance, which will also bring down maximum temperatures by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Mercury could touch 40 degrees Celsius on April 15-16 but a heat wave is unlikely this month, meteorologists said on Wednesday.
A heat wave is declared if the maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, at least 37 degrees Celsius in coastal areas and at least 30 degrees Celsius in hilly regions, and the departure from normal is at least 4.5 degrees Celsius.
"South Haryana is unlikely to face a heatwave in April as a western disturbance is going to hit the region from April 17 and will continue for two more days, resulting in rain in a few areas. This will also bring down the maximum and minimum temperature by two to four degrees," said Manmohan Singh, Chandigarh IMD director.
Gurgaon experienced a hot and windy morning on Wednesday with the minimum temperature settling at 22.1 degree Celsius, five notches above Tuesday's temperature (17 degree Celsius), while the maximum temperature was recorded at 36.2 degrees Celsius -0.3 degrees notches below Tuesday's temperature (37.1 degrees Celsius). According to the IMD, the sky is likely to remain clear in the city for the next four days.
The city's air quality index (AQI) on Wednesday was recorded at 201 (poor). According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), "Strong surface wind between 25-35 km/hour is likely to prevail over Haryana and Uttar Pradesh on April 12-13."
Last year in April, the temperature crossed 45 degrees Celsius in the city. On April 28, 2022, IMD's Observatory in the city recorded 45.6 degrees Celsius as the maximum temperature breaking the previous all-time record of 44.8 degree Celsius on April 28, 1979. Temperatures soared to higher than 40 degrees Celsius for more than 25 days in April 2022 in Gurgaon.
Meanwhile, Delhi saw a light drizzle on Wednesday morning that failed to impact the maximum temperature. The weather department expects a light drizzle in Delhi-NCR on Thursday too, along with a rise in the maximum temperature.
Wednesday's maximum temperature was recorded at 36.7 degrees Celsius, a degree above normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 22.1 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal. It was 16.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
