Samsung Electronics subsidiary Harman International has announced that it has opened a new automotive engineering center in Chennai, India. Situated on Mount-Poonamallee Road (MPR) in Porur, the new research and development center will be fully operational before the end of the second quarter of 2023. Samsung acquired HARMAN International in 2018 for $8 billion for its growing automobile business.

This new research and development center will use a rich talent pool of automotive engineers in Chennai and will work with the company’s other development centers in Bengaluru and Pune. The company plans to develop advanced automotive technologies and best-in-class cabin experiences for connected cars. Harman makes some of the best in-cabin entertainment, connectivity, driver assistance, and autonomous driving solutions for vehicles.

The company’s new engineering center in India will start with a workforce of 200 employees and add more people in the next few years. In line with Samsung Electronics’ eco-friendly missions, Harman’s new automotive engineering center has used advanced motion sensor lights, VAV units, and eco-friendly furniture. It also has EV charging stations for its employees.

Prathab Deivanayagham, Managing Director at HARMAN India, said, “With our automotive legacy and ground-breaking new products, we are well-positioned to deliver consumer experiences, automotive grade to our customers. We are excited about the opportunities this new facility will bring, both for our domestic OEMs and as a key driver of HARMAN’s global innovations.
