3 sewage machines launched in Silchar to clean up drains
Silchar: In a major step towards making Silchar a cleaner city, the authorities launched three super-sucker machines at the Silchar Municipal Board premises. The machines, which include one generator and two tankers, will be used to clean and remove garbage from the drains in the municipal areas.
Silchar, the second largest city in Assam after Guwahati in terms of number of population, holds 346th place in the list of best self-sustaining cities in India, according to a ranking prepared by the Swach Survekshan, Swach Bharat Mission for urban areas.
“Previously, garbage in urban areas was picked up by excavators and first dried, but now these vehicles will directly suck the garbage and sewage from the sewers and dump it at Meherpur trenching ground. The initiative is part of a larger effort to improve the infrastructure of Silchar Municipal Board,” said Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty on Monday.
He said the super-sucker machines will be very effective in making Silchar a beautiful and clean city by cleaning the canals. He also mentioned that the government has already instructed the preparation of a DPR of 10 more km on either side of the 3.75m stretch of the Rangirkhal sewage canal, a major sewerage canal of this southern Assam town.
Sources said as the drainage system of this town with nearly four lakh population has collapsed over the years and authorities have failed to develop any modern drainage, waterlogging is a perennial problem.
