MC starts giving E-rickshaws to staff
Ludhiana: Finally, civic officials have started distributing e-rickshaws among sanitation staff for door-to-door garbage collection in the city. Preference is being given to areas where door-to-door garbage collection is not being done and areas where garbage collection points are far from households.
Officials claimed that this would help meet 100% door-to-door garbage collection target. The e-rickshaws had been kept in the MC workshop for almost 10 months.
The civic body had purchased the e-rickshaws under the National Clean Air Programme to ensure 100% garbage lifting from households. Claims were also made to enhance the pace of garbage lifting as the traditional way to lift garbage through rehris takes a lot of time. One e-rickshaw has the capacity to lift 3 cubic meters of garbage at a time. Local bodies minister Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar flagged off the e-rickshaws last July.
Sanitation employees who are working permanently with the MC have been given the responsibility of the e-rickshaws. Joint commissioner Ankur Mahindroo said, “We have started distribution of e-rickshaws among the sanitation employees in various areas according to the demand raised by area sanitation staff. We are giving the e-rickshaws in areas where door-to-door garbage lifting is not happening or secondary garbage collection points are far away.”
