MUMBAI: In the IIT-B death by suicide case, police have sent the medicines recovered from Darshan Solanki’s hostel room on the Powai campus to a board of government doctors to ascertain if he was suffering from any psychiatric disorders.
Solanki (18), a first-year chemical engineering student, had jumped to his death from the seventh floor of his hostel building on February 12, a day after his semester exams ended. He has fared poorly in his semester exams, police had said.
On Sunday, the city crime branch had arrested Solanki’s classmate Armaan Khatri (19) on charges of abetment to suicide. Khatri was allegedly named in suicide note, which was found in his hostel room by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) nearly a month after his death.
Two days before his suicide, on February 10, Solanki and Khatri had a 45-minute heated argument, Hemant Birade and another student told the SIT. Police said Birade told them that Solanki had passed communal remarks against Khatri and the latter had threatened him with a paper cutter. Solanki later apologised to him “Khatri told us that he has not said anything that instigated Solanki to commit suicide, but Solanki’s friend said that he was scared of Khatri and since the argument on February 10, was apologizing to him,” a police officer said.
On the fateful day, Khatri had planned to go to a water park with 8-9 other students, including Solanki, the police said. “There are some missing links we need to establish,” the police officer added.
