Case of mom-son drowning in Raigad turns out to be suicide
A 73-year-old woman, Dorthy Frederick and her 46-year-old son Vijay Alfred from Kalyan died by suicide after jumping into the sea at Chikni beach, in Murud.
NAVI MUMBAI: A case of suspected drowning has turned out to be a case of suicide. A 73-year-old woman, Dorthy Frederick and her 46-year-old son Vijay Alfred from Kalyan died by suicide after jumping into the sea at Chikni beach, in Murud, Raigad district, last week.
Police suspect that Vijay was facing financial problems after losing his job at a Malad-based hotel in Mumbai. The police also found their car. No one from their hometown in Kotagiri village, Tamil Nadu, has come forward to claim their bodies said police.
The bodies are currently kept in a NMMC hospital's mortuary at Vashi. The mother-son duo had checked into a hotel in Murud on April 3, and checked out on April 5. Murud police retrieved the man's body at around 1.30am on April 6, followed by that of his mother at around 7am after they were alerted by locals. The police found a large number of empty pens, chocolate covers etc in their flat.
The members of the housing society where they stayed had informed the police that the mother-son duo were reclusive in nature. Murud police inspector Prakash Sakpal said, "Vijay failed in repaying the flat and car loans after losing his high-paying job at a hotel in Malad. He also defaulted in repaying the money he had borrowed."
