Atiq Ahmed brought to Prayagraj's Naini jail, to be produced in court on Thursday

PRAYAGRAJ: Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad on Wednesday was brought to the Naini Central Jail from Gujarat's Sabarmati prison for quizzing in connection with the murder of lawyer Umesh Pal and his two police gunners.
According to officials, Ahmed arrived at the jail at around 6pm.

on Thursday, the gangster-turned-politician will be produced in chief judicial magistrate Dinesh Gautam's court in the Umesh Pal murder case.
"Due to delay, he could not be produced in the court today," a senior police official said.

Ahmed's brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf, who is brought to Naini jail from Bareilly, will also be produced in the court in the same case.

After the police bring Atiq under relevant warrant to Prayagraj and lodge at Naini central jail, they are likely to apply for his custody remand from a local court.
This is the second time Atiq is brought to Prayagraj from Sabarmati within a fortnight.
The team of Prayagraj police comprising 37 members is being led by an inspector-rank official. Earlier, a 22-members team of Prayagraj Police had brought him to Prayagraj on March 27 to produce him before the MP/MLA court.
On March 28, the court had sentenced Atiq Ahmed to life imprisonment in connection with the Umesh Pal kidnapping case in 2006.
The Supreme Court had in April 2019 directed that Atiq Ahmed should be shifted to the high-security Sabarmati jail in Gujarat after he was accused of orchestrating from jail the kidnap and attack on a real estate businessman Mohit Jaiswal.
He has been lodged at the Sabarmati jail since June 2019. Ahmed is facing 103 criminal cases, including Umesh Pal murder.
