NEW DELHI: The maximum temperature was up by two degrees Celsius on Tuesday, the weather department said, adding that it will rise gradually and parts of the city will see heatwaves from April 15 to May 31.
According to the weather department, dry and dusty westerly winds from Rajasthan have worsened the air quality to the 'poor' category. The humidity levels on Tuesday oscillated between 77% and 23%, weather officials said.
The maximum temperature was recorded at 36.8 degrees Celsius - the highest in the year so far - a notch above the season's normal against 34.9 degrees Celsius a day earlier.
The city also saw a slight rise in the minimum temperature. It was recorded at 16.6 degrees Celsius, four notches below normal against 15.7 degrees Celsius a day earlier.
"The temperature will have a gradual rise...in the next three days, it may rise to around 40 degrees Celsius," said Kuldeep Srivastava, senior scientist, IMD.
The weather analysts expect the maximum and minimum temperatures to hover around 37 and 18 degrees Celsius, respectively, on Wednesday.
According to agencies, the air quality is likely to remain in the 'poor' category till Friday.
