BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is taking steps to ensure the proper disposal of municipal waste and is intensifying its awareness drive on segregating waste among residents and shopkeepers across the city.
The civic body is taking the help non-government organisations, which are empanelled with the BMC, in reaching out to every apartment, individual household and commercial establishment to educate them on the safe practice of separating the waste at the source before handing it over to the municipal vehicles.
"We need to make sure that the waste is segregated at the source and the citizens need to be made aware of it. We are trying to reach out to every individual in the city and the response is quite favourable," BMC commissioner Vijay Amruta Kulange said.
As a stringent measure, the BMC has also started refusing to collect waste from apartments, shops or any other commercial establishments if it has not been segregated in separate bins.
According to the Solid Waste Management Rules of 2016, every waste generator shall segregate the waste in separate bins before handing it over to the municipal workers or any other authorised waste pickers. "The rules are there to ensure a proper disposal of the municipal waste. Every waste has its own way of disposal and segregating the same at the source helps us in its proper disposal at the end point," BMC additional commissioner Suvendu Sahoo said.
Right now, the civic body is urging people to separate the waste in two bins - dry waste in blue bins and wet waste in green.
