Accused murderer held without bail, charged with killing two while free after 2021 shootout with NYPD

A gunman turned loose on bail after a wild 2021 shootout with the NYPD remained behind bars Wednesday after his court appearance for a pair of brutal Harlem killings this past weekend.

Defendant Messiah Nantwi, 21, was remanded without bail at a Manhattan Criminal Court appearance on two counts of murder for gunning down the two victims in a lethal 27-hour period.

He was back on the streets after posting just $30,000 of the imposed $300,000 bail in the Feb. 21, 2021, gunfight with cops in the Bronx. Prosecutors fought unsuccessfully for his incarceration after his arrest for shooting at three officers who caught him spraying graffiti on a wall in the Bronx.

“He’s a poster child for recidivism,” said Mayor Adams on Wednesday. “And there’s a lot of extreme recidivism.”

The suspect, identified as a member of the local OTN Goodfellas gang, shot both victims once before standing over the helpless targets and firing again from close range, said Assistant District Attorney Danielle Turcotte.

“While out on (the police shooting) case, the defendant murdered not one but two people,” said Turcotte, adding Nantwi was identified by video in both shootings and by an eyewitness who saw him fleeing the scene in the second.

Nantwi was arrested Monday while riding a Citi Bike on Lenox Ave., with the .9mm murder weapon found nearby, and police had yet to provide any motive for either killing.

According to Turcotte, preliminary ballistics tests showed the recovered gun was used in both the Saturday slaying of 19-year-old Jaylen Duncan on the street and the Sunday execution of Brandon Brunson, 36, inside a neighborhood smoke shop.

Nantwi was described by his Harlem neighbors as a Jekyll and Hyde type, always friendly and pleasant with local residents who were shocked by the arrest.

“He was always polite,” said one neighbor. “We wouldn’t think, right down the hall. He just threw away his life.”

The shootings began this past Saturday when Nantwi fired at Duncan on the corner of E. 132nd St. and Madison Ave., then stood over the defenseless victim and blasted him several more times, said Turcotte.

One day later, inside a smoke shop on Lenox Ave., he shot Brunson in the head before again pumping more bullets into his target before fleeing, the prosecutor said. Video clearly showed the gunman’s face in both incidents, and the suspect fled to his apartment complex after the Duncan shooting, she added.

During the gunfight two years ago, Nantwi pulled a gun and fired three times at the uniformed officers before they returned fire, officials said. The 2021 prosecution is still pending, according to court records.

Defense attorney Mitchell Schuman declined to comment after the hearing where he argued that Nantwi made 20 subsequent court appearances in the earlier case and attended his court-mandated treatment program without issue. The defendant was ordered to return to court this Friday.
