Anjuna cop dies in head-on collision at Canacona

Canacona: A police constable attached to Anjuna traffic cell died in a road accident in Canacona on Monday.
Police constable Rakesh Virnodkar, a resident of Siolim, was among five policemen who were returning in a car from a pilgrimage to Murudeshwar.
The accident occurred at around 2.30am when the vehicle collided with a Maharashtra registered fish-laden truck at Tanshi junction, Sheli, police said.
Canacona police inspector Chandrakant Gawas said that Virnodkar died on the spot, while the other four cops were injured and are undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital, Bambolim.
Head constable Kalidas Shetye, a resident of Agarwada, Pernem, was driving the car and sustained grievous injuries.
The other occupants were head constables Krishna Palyekar, a resident of Paliem, Pernem, and Rajesh Patekar, a resident of Mandrem, and constable Pritesh Mandrekar, a resident of Arambol.
Following postmortem, examination, the body was handed over to relatives for final rites.
Police have registered a motor accident case, and further investigation is being carried out by police sub-inspector Ramchandra Naik.
