Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray hit back at Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrakant Patil over his remark on Babri Masjid demolition.

On Monday, Patil, a minister in the Eknath Shinde government, said not even a single Shiv Sena party worker was present when the Babri Masjid was brought down on December 6, 1992. Patil added that during the demolition, only the Bajrang Dal and the Durga Vahini was present.

Patil also gave a backhanded compliment to Sanjay Raut, the Shiv Sena UBT’s Rajya Sabha MP, asking if Raut was even present in Ayodhya when the masjid was brought down though he keeps talking about it.

In response to Patil’s remarks, Uddhav Thackeray addressed a press conference and demanded that either CM Shinde or Patil should resign over such remarks. Bal Thackeray, the founder of the Shiv Sena, had often claimed his Shiv Sena workers were part of the action in demolishing the Babri Masjid.

Taking a swipe at Uddhav Thackeray for his accusations that legacy of Bal Thackeray was stolen, Patil said Bal Thackeray is a property of all Hindus and every single Hindu has the right to use his name and invoke his legacy.

In June last year, the Shiv Sena split after rebellion by the Eknath Shinde Camp which led to political drama in Maharashtra. It ended with the formation of another coalition government but with BJP participation and rebel Sena MLAs, with Eknath Shinde as Chief Minister and Devendra Fadnavis as his Deputy.

Post rebellion, the Election Commission of India allotted the Shiv Sena name, bow and arrow electoral symbol to the Shinde group while the Uddhav faction had to add the UBT after the Shiv Sena name and had to satisfy itself with a flaming torch for poll symbol.

The demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992 was a watershed year in India’s history as right-wing politics assumed centre-stage displacing the Congress and the Janata socialist branches.

Sonia Gandhi attacks PM Modi

Former Congress chief and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi has attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government in an editorial in The Hindu.

She said the Central government was systematically dismantling the pillars of India’s democracy, in the editorial titled ‘An enforced silence cannot solve India’s problems’.

Gandhi said it is a strategy of the people in power currently to disrupt parliamentary sessions and to prevent the opposition from discussing important matters and raising issues such as unemployment, inflation, social divisions, the Budget, and the Adani scam.

On the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha as a member after his conviction in a Surat court, Sonia Gandhi said the central government has taken unprecedented measures to combat the determined opposition.

Sonia Gandhi referred to these as tools of diversion to pass the Union Budget 2023 which projected expenditure of Rs 45 lakh crore and which was passed without any debate or discussion in Parliament.

Sonia Gandhi on misuse of Central agencies

Gandhi said central probe agencies are being misused and over 95 per cent of the cases currently are against opposition parties who speak up against the government. Gandhi said opposition leaders who shake hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party find that cases against them automatically evaporate.

Last year, there were multiple summons against Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi in the National Herald case. Huge nationwide protests were staged by the Congress party against the government alleging the misuse of the probe agencies.

The opposition parties on a daily routine are attacking the Central government against the misuse of central probe agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate, the CBI to file cases against opposition leaders in order to silence them.

Last month, 14 opposition parties approached the Supreme Court alleging the misuse of these agencies. The Apex Court had however rejected the plea saying the parties cannot aspire to hold a greater status than citizens.
