Girl's stalker stabs her mother to death, held in Punjab

LUDHIANA: Focal Point police on Monday arrested a 23-year-old man for killing a 46-year-old woman of Kohara village. The accused allegedly had been harassing the victim's daughter due to which she had gone to the accused's house to complain to his parents a few days back. The woman's 18-year-old daughter was present at home when the accused stabbed her mother to death. The accused had run after her with a knife, but she had locked herself in the bathroom to save herself.
The victim has been identified as Babaljit Kaur and the accused was Harshdeep Singh, also of Kohara. The police arrested the accused from the Ludhiana courts complex when he had gone there to surrender.
Babaljit's father Bant Singh said her daughter's husband had died about 13 years ago and therefore Babaljit along with her daughter Navjot Kaur, 18, and son Simon Singh, 15, used to live with him. Babaljit had told her on April 8 that Harshdeep had been harassing Navjot and was forcing her to marry him. Following this, he had gone to Harshdeep's house to talk to his parents, however his parents told him that Harshdeep had gone to attend a tournament in the village. Thereafter Bant Singh returned home and saw Harshdeep stabbing Babaljit with a knife.
He raised an alarm after which the accused escaped from the spot. Babaljit was rushed to a hospital where she died.
Inspector Amandeep Singh Brar, SHO, Focal Point police station, said a few days back, Babaljit had complained to Harshdeep's parents and threatened to lodge a police complaint against him. Before that, she had deterred Harshdeep from harassing her daughter. The accused kept grudge against the woman and her daughter. On Sunday, the accused barged into their home. Babaljit was on the veranda while her daughter was in the room. The accused asked about the girl after barging into the house. When Babaljit asked him to leave, the accused assaulted her. The accused stabbed the woman in her throat. Her daughter came to the veranda after hearing the cries of her mother. The accused ran after her, but she locked herself in the bathroom, the SHO said.
The police said it is suspected that the accused wanted to kill Navjot too. A case under Section 302 (murder) of IPC has been registered against the accused. Harshdeep was produced in a court, which sent him to 3-day police remand.
