So that happened on Succession.

This should be obvious but massive spoilers ahead, stop reading right now if you don't want to know the major plot point that happened in the third episode of Succession's fourth and final season.

OK... Logan Roy died. They finally killed him off, and yet it was still utterly shocking and beautifully written and acted.

The death happened suddenly, mostly out of view from the camera. Logan had a medical episode on a plane and the kids are left saying their (likely unheard) goodbyes into a phone held close to their dying father. The grief and shock played out in real time, the audience immersed like the family, which was, incidentally, at Connor's wedding.

Succession didn't telegraph this moment at all, despite spending years flirting with the idea of Logan's health failing him. The internet immediately exploded with memes. It was...pretty hard to avoid spoilers if you weren't watching live.

For instance, there was this mash-up of his greatest "fuck offs," cheekily described as a celebration of life.

And there were jokes, of course.

There were reactions to the way the death played out onscreen.

And there were lots and lots (and lots) of people demanding awards for the actors in the show. Sarah Snook, in particular, got lots of admiration for portrayal of Shiv processing the death of her father over the phone. It was a perfect depiction of the shock and grief of sudden loss.

All in all, it was a hell of an episode of television. And we can rest assured we're only going to get more unpredictable now that Logan, the sun around which the Roy family revolved, is gone. In that vacuum, we can expect...well...just about anything.
