PRAYAGRAJ: Following the arrest of jailed mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad’s brother-in-law Akhlaq Ahmad, on charges of giving shelter and economic assistance to one of the assailants of Umesh Pal and two of his police gunners from Meerut police, police have begun probing the role of Akhlaq’s wife Ayesha Noori ( Atiq Ahmad’s sister) and his daughters in the case.
Sources in police department and STF claimed that after obtaining CCTV footage wherein one of the assailants of Umesh Pal was seen inside Akhlaq’s Meerut house after the Dhoomganj shootout incident, the police had arrested Akhlaq and collected evidence against him.
Akhlaq was then brought to Prayagraj and the remand magistrate had last week sent Akhlaq Ahmed, a Meerut-based government doctor and brother-in-law of mafia don Atiq Ahmed, to jail in 14 days’ judicial custody in connection with the murder case.
A senior police official, on condition of anonymity, told TOI, “ We are now making efforts to ascertain the role of Akhlaq’s wife Ayesha Noori ( sister of Atiq Ahmad) in connection with Umesh Pal murder case. Ayesha is now wanted by police and things would become clear once she is arrested”.
Ayesha Noori was also spotted in the cavalcade when Atiq was being brought to Prayagraj from Sabarmati for hearing in a 2006 case related to Umesh Pal kidnapping.
Last week, police found a car in neighbouring Kaushambi district, used allegedly by assailants after the shootout incident. Police said Akhlaq and his family had an idea about this car and more things would be clear after a detailed probe.
However, the police have been connecting link of incidents after Dhoomanganj shootout incident wherein lawyer Umesh Pal, prime witness in the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case, along with two of his police gunner was killed on February 24 outside his house in Sulemsarai area under the limits of Dhoomanganj police station.
