Thousands of children, which include runaways and those reported missing, work as child labourers and other menial jobs in and around the bustling and busy New Delhi Railway Station and its surrounding areas to sustain themselves.

Some even resort to begging while other unfortunate ones become an easy prey for child traffickers and pedophiles, reports have said.

According to Bengaluru-based child welfare NGO, Society for Assistance to Children in Difficult Situations or SATHI, which has been on a mission rescuing children from railway stations across India since 1992, at least 60,000 to 80,000 children end up at various railway platforms across the country each year and it is almost an impossible job to rescue them all.

As per SATHI’s data, most of the runaway children who escape to big cities belong to disadvantaged lower income groups and nearly 60 percent come from poor families from India’s most impoverished parts.
