Ludhiana: With 94 cases of Covid-19 surfacing in the past seven days, Ludhiana’s weekly count has reached 7-month high. The count during April 2-8 period has registered 161% rise as compared to the previous week.
The number of cases in the district between April 2 and 8 stood at 94. It was only in the week between August 21 and 27 last year when 136 cases had surfaced in the district, higher than the current value.
The data revealed that 36 cases were reported between March 26 and April 1. In the ongoing year, in January, February and most weeks of March, the number of cases during the week had remained in single digit.
In the second half of 2022, weekly cases had fallen from three digits to double digit. During August 28-September 3 period, the number stood at 68.
Weekly cases were in single digit on November 6 to 12 last year and remained the same till December end. No case was reported between December 18 to 24.
At 94, Ludhiana was 2nd worst district in the state after Mohali which reported 194 fresh cases during the week. Jalandhar was number three with 68 cases between April 2 to 8. Malerkotla was the only district to report no new case during the week.
Civil surgeon Dr Hatinder Kaur said there are intermittent surges during the pandemic. She said they have already issued Covid-related advisory to people.
Health experts said people need to follow Covid norms in view of growing cases and those eligible for due dose should get it without further delay.
“People who are yet to get their booster dose should get it as it offers protection. Besides people should adopt Covid-appropriate behaviour with immediate effect to check the possible spread,” said president-elect Punjab IMA Dr Sunil Katyal.
