Explainer: The Amul Vs Nandini Battle in Poll-bound Karnataka

Gujarat-based dairy cooperative Amul’s announcement on April 5 to enter enter the Karnataka market to supply its milk and curd has given the opposition yet another ammunition to fire at the ruling BJP, much as it came months after Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s announcement that the two brands’ cooperation could “do wonders” for the dairy sector. Shah also holds the Cooperation portfolio.

The opposition Congress and the JD(S) have trained their guns at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the state when the assembly elections are just a month away, expressing fears that Nandini, the Rs 21,000 crore brand, from the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), could be merged with the Gujarat-based Amul. The people of the state have an emotional connect with Nandini.

The opposition alleges that the BJP wants to merge the 49-year-old KMC’s Nandini with its much elder Anand Milk Union Limited (AMUL) so that there could be “One nation, one Amul” in the country. The BJP has emphatically rejected the charge

Siddaramaiah, Kolar Missing from Cong’s Second List for K'taka; Fresh Faces, Turncoats Get Ticket

Former chief minister Siddaramaiah’s wish to stand from Kolar remained unaddressed as the second list of 42 candidates released by the Congress on Thursday did not have the name of the high-stakes assembly seat. The Kolar candidate is likely to feature in the third list, which will be declared in the next few days, sources said.

In its second list for the upcoming assembly elections in Karnataka, the party has given a ticket to over 20 fresh faces and three turncoats, who switched from the BJP and JDS. READ MORE

list has been prepared and will be released in two phases. “The first list has the majority of the seats and will be released shortly.”

When asked about Eshwarappa’s decision, Bommai said he has written to BJP chief Nadda saying he is quitting electoral politics. “He has been saying this to me personally for several months,” he added.

Meanwhile, quashing Election Commission’s March 19 action where officials had seized grocery items claiming it to be poll malpractice, the High Court said that no goods can be searched or seized before polls are declared.

On Monday, the BJP high command held multiple rounds of meetings to finalise a list of its candidates for the upcoming Karnataka Assembly polls. Some senior leaders from Karnataka were part of the deliberation to finalise candidates for the state assembly polls.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, party president JP Nadda, Bommai, his predecessor BS Yediyurappa and other leaders from the state attended these meetings. Shah later left for Arunachal Pradesh while other leaders continued the deliberations.

Bommai had on Sunday said after the CEC meeting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave some directions. The CM told reporters on Monday that the party is working on various inputs. He, however, did not elaborate on the nature of directions or inputs.

Speaking to reporters after attending a meeting at Nadda’s residence, Yediyurappa rejected the speculation that he was “unhappy” with the candidate-selection exercise and praised the party leadership.

There is a view that the opinion of Yediyurappa, who remains the party’s foremost leader in Karnataka, for various seats is at variance with some other senior leaders. Yediyurappa said the first list of about 170 to 180 candidates for the May 10 elections to the 224-member assembly is expected soon.

Noting that the nomination process for the polls begins on April 13, a party leader said there is no hurry to name the candidates and the BJP will analyse various equations before announcing the names.

Politics is heating up in poll-bound Karnataka with the issue of the “lotus-shaped” airport terminal in Shivamogga and the row over Amul’s entry into the state being the latest ones hitting the headlines.

While Congress has asked the Election Commission of India to cover up the lotus-shaped Shivamogga airport terminal till polls conclude, the party has also raised objection to Amul’s entry into the state while rooting for Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), whose products are sold under the name ‘Nandini’.

Meanwhile, with just days left for the assembly polls in Karnataka, another development on the political front in the state has been the much-awaited Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate list which is expected to be released today.

Voting for the Karnataka Assembly election 2023 will take place on May 10, while the counting of votes and results will be out on May 13.

The BJP Central Election Committee (CEC) met in Delhi on Sunday to finalise party’s candidates for the Karnataka assembly polls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was joined by Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah, BJP national president JP Nadda and other members of the CEC along with senior party leaders, including Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, to discuss the names of probable candidates.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who last week said some seats will give a “surprise result”, confirmed on Sunday that he is going to contest from Shiggaon seat. CM Bommai had said a few days back he would seek reelection from his home town of Shiggaon in Haveri district in the Assembly elections.

Amul vs Nandini Debate Escalates

As Karnataka inches towards elections, the political row over the entry of Amul into Karnataka gas escalated, with Opposition attacking the BJP government and the Prime Minister destroying cooperative society, Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF).

Former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah took to Twitter to attack Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, labelling the move as “Gujarat intrusion” into Karnataka.

“With the entry of Gujarat’s Amul into our state the demand for Nandini will further fall and the storage of KMF will further decrease. Why are you trying to hurt the farmers whose main source of Income is dairy farming Mr.Narendra Modiji?[sic]” read the tweet.

Siddaramaiah further alleged that the products of state brand Nandini are fast disappearing from the market and are being replaced by Amul right after Home minister Amit Shah pitched the idea of merger of Amul and KMF in Karnataka and called it an unusual development taking place in the state of Karnataka.

PM Modi in Poll-bound Karnataka

PM Modi was in the poll-bound state on Sunday and took a jungle safari at the Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka, as part of programmes that were lined up to mark 50 years of “Project Tiger”.

Donning speckled safari clothing, shades and hat, PM Modi reportedly covered went on a 20-km long safari in an open jeep at the Tiger Reserve which is located partly in Gundlupet taluk of Chamarajanagar district, and partly in HD Kote and Nanjangud taluks of Mysuru District.

Later, PM Modi also visited the Theppakkadu elephant camp at Mudumalai in the hilly Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu and interacted with Bellie and Bomman, the elephant caretakers who featured in an Oscar-winning documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’.

Suspense On Over Congress’s Kolar Seat Face; Siddaramaiah, Kolar Missing from Party’s 2nd List for Karnataka

Former chief minister Siddaramaiah’s wish to stand from Kolar remained unaddressed as the second list of 42 candidates released by the Congress on Thursday, April 6, did not have the name of the high-stakes assembly seat. Sources said the Kolar candidate is expected to feature in the third list, which will be declared in the next few days, sources said.

Another event that has kept the poll-bound state in limelight is the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 that is currently underway and will see a high-octane match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants in Bengaluru today.

In the middle of ever-increasing political stress ahead of the state assembly elections in Karnataka, Congress leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah took a breather and enjoyed an IPL match on April 2. Siddaramaiah watched the game between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Mumbai Indians at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
