While the first list of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with a majority of seats, is out, the delay in finalising it was caused over a difference of opinion between B S Yediyurappa (BSY), a parliamentary board member and former Chief Minister, and another senior leader from the state, as well as a demand for tickets for all turncoat MLAs.
The dates to announce the list of the BJP candidates was moved ahead at least thrice in the past week, before Karnataka Chief Minister BS Bommai said on Tuesday evening that the lists had been finalised in two batches.
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya said R Ashoka will contest against Congress’ DK Shivakumar from Kanakapura while V Somanna will contest against Former CM & Congress leader Siddaramaiah. “This will further boost the confidence of party workers. We are sure BJP will comfortably cross the majority mark,” added the leader.
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya evades the question of not a single Muslim candidate given a ticket in BJP’s first list of 189 candidates and later said: “there are many other seats, the party will take a call.”
The Bharatiya Janata Party has not given ticket to Anant kumar’s wife Tejaswini. Her name was doing rounds for Basavanagudi and Jayanagar seats in Bengaluru.
BJP Sources said that Jagadish Shettar has been asked to come to Delhi so that senior leaders can speak to him. He has been adamant that Central leadership has not yet declared candidate for Hubli Central.

Supporters of BJP MLAs Mahadevappa Yadawad and Anil Benake were seen last night protesting over ticket being denied to the leaders. While Chikka Revana, who joined the BJP, has got the ticket from the Yadawad’s constituency Ramdurg, Dr Ravi Patil has been fielded from Belagavi North, which is Anil Benake’s constituency.
Amid the protests, CM Bommai said that the party spoke to those being replaced, adding that they were given reasons and were told about the about the opportunity they will be getting later.
The first list of BJP does not have a single Muslim candidate. Answering a query on the same, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya said, “There are many other seats, the party will take a call”.
Of the 189 candidates, 52 are new faces, eight candidates are women, 32 belong to Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 30 to Scheduled Castes (SCs) and 16 to Scheduled Tribes (STs). Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai will contest from Shiggaon constituency, while BJP leader R Ashok has been fielded from Padmanabhanagar and Kanakapura where he will fight against the Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar.
Meanwhile, former chief minister Jagadish Shettar said the BJP central leadership has told him to make way for others, indicating that he would not be given a ticket to contest in the upcoming Karnataka assembly elections. He said he was hurt by the decision, adding that it was not “acceptable” to him.
Speaking to the media, Shettar said he has urged the leadership to reconsider it and he was told that the matter would be discussed again. “My popularity is good even in the survey. I have not lost a single election. There is no reason to deny my ticket, so I have requested the party high command to give me an opportunity to contest,” Shettar told the news agency ANI.
On the other hand, BJP Shivamogga MLA KS Eshwarappa said he would not contest the upcoming state elections. In a letter to BJP Chief JP Nadda, the former minister said he was withdrawing from electoral politics. The move came amid growing speculation about the Bharatiya Janata Party’s delayed announcement of candidates for the Karnataka elections 2023.
When asked about Eshwarappa’s decision, Bommai said he has written to BJP chief Nadda saying he is quitting electoral politics. “He has been saying this to me personally for several months,” he added.
