In big jolt to the BJP, former Karnataka deputy CM Laxman Savadi quit the party in revolt over being denied ticket for the upcoming state assembly poll.
This development comes as another top leader of the state party unit, Karnataka’s former chief minister Jagadish Shettar, is scheduled to meet Bharatiya Janata Party national president JP Nadda around 2 pm amid disappointment within the party post the release of first list of candidates for upcoming state elections.
“I am going to Delhi because Nadda had dialled me. He asked me to come over for a discussion. I am hoping for a positive outcome. Whatever will happen, will be for the good of the party. In the coming days, the party high command and state leaders will specify everything,” Shettar said.
The former CM further said that has already met BS Yediyurappa, who was in Delhi for meetings to finalise tickets for the May 10 Karnataka assembly elections. “I am going directly to Delhi as my flight is delayed. Amid massive outrage in BJP from leaders who have not been named in the first list of candidates for Karnataka polls, party MP Tejasvi Surya said that BJP has multiple opportunities for all those who want to contribute to the nation.
“BJP has given tickets to 52 new leaders. I am confident that all new leaders will understand the principles that have gone behind the selection of candidates. The party has multiple opportunities for all those who want to contribute to the nation,” Tejasvi Surya said.
Supporters of BJP MLAs Mahadevappa Yadawad and Anil Benake were seen last night protesting over tickets being denied to the leaders. While Chikka Revana, who joined the BJP, has got the ticket from the Yadawad’s constituency Ramdurg, Dr Ravi Patil has been fielded from Belagavi North, which is Anil Benake’s constituency.
In another major development on this front, around 1,200 BJP workers have reportedly quit the party in support of NR Ramesh whose name was not in the first list of candidates. NR Ramesh was eyeing a ticket from Jayanagar constituency in Bengaluru. They even staged protests against the same after the list was announced.
Amid the protests, CM Bommai said that the party spoke to those being replaced, adding that they were given reasons and were told about the opportunity they will be getting later.
The first list of BJP does not have a single Muslim candidate. Answering a query on the same, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya said, “There are many other seats, the party will take a call”.
Of the 189 candidates, 52 are new faces, eight candidates are women, 32 belong to Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 30 to Scheduled Castes (SCs) and 16 to Scheduled Tribes (STs). Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai will contest from Shiggaon constituency, while BJP leader R Ashok has been fielded from Padmanabhanagar and Kanakapura where he will fight against the Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar.
Meanwhile, former chief minister Jagadish Shettar said the BJP central leadership has told him to make way for others, indicating that he would not be given a ticket to contest in the upcoming Karnataka assembly elections. He said he was hurt by the decision, adding that it was not “acceptable” to him.
Speaking to the media, Shettar said he has urged the leadership to reconsider it and he was told that the matter would be discussed again. “My popularity is good even in the survey. I have not lost a single election. There is no reason to deny my ticket, so I have requested the party high command to give me an opportunity to contest,” Shettar told the news agency ANI.
On the other hand, BJP Shivamogga MLA KS Eshwarappa said he would not contest the upcoming state elections. In a letter to BJP Chief JP Nadda, the former minister said he was withdrawing from electoral politics. The move came amid growing speculation about the Bharatiya Janata Party’s delayed announcement of candidates for the Karnataka elections 2023.
When asked about Eshwarappa’s decision, Bommai said he has written to BJP chief Nadda saying he is quitting electoral politics. “He has been saying this to me personally for several months,” he added.
