Fire breaks out in 10 shops in Kanpur's Chalis Dukan market
The fire first broke out in a garment shop in Chalis Dukan market.
KANPUR: A major fire broke out in ten thatched shops in the Chalis Dukan market in Babupurwa area of Kanpur on Monday morning.
The fire first broke out in the garment shop of one Rohit Kumar, located in Chalis Dukan market.
Kumar said that around 6am, some people at the market apprised him about the fire.
"Soon the fire spread and within no time engulfed nine more shops," he said.
Locals of the area went to the spot and tried to control the blaze, but in vain. Immediately, they alerted the fire control room and Babupurwa police station.
Three fire tenders from Fazalganj and Meerpur Cantt fire stations were pressed into service to douse the fire. The fire was brought under control after about two hours, but by then property and goods worth several lakhs of the ten shops were destroyed.
ACP Babupurwa Santosh Kumar Singh said, "The fire has been doused completely. Investigations to ascertain the exact cause of the fire are under way."
