COIMBATORE: As many as 2,070 people, including corporation workers, volunteers from NGOs and members of residents’ welfare associations came together on Saturday to clean public places in the city, including bus terminals.
A team cleaned the walls, floor and toilets in Gandhipuram Central Bus Terminal using water jet machines. The bus terminal at Ukkadam, Mettupalayam Road New Bus Terminal and Singanallur Bus Terminal were also cleaned.
Clean-up drives were also conducted at public places such as parks, lakes beautified under the smart city scheme and leisure spots.
In an event organised at the Gandhipuram Central Bus Terminal, mayor Kalpana Anandakumar created awareness about cleanliness and proper disposal of garbage. She urged passengers to stop using plastic bags, which have been banned by the state government.
The mayor distributed manjappai to passengers and urged them to use them as an alternative to plastic bags.
Corporation commissioner M Prathap and central zone chairman Meena Loganathan also attended the drive.
