NEW DELHI: Taking a serious view of a Congress functionary’s threat to chop off the tongue of the judge who passed the conviction order against
Rahul Gandhi, Union law minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday said that the government will not remain silent if the opposition party tried to “tear apart the Constitution”.
“Congress is in frustration and attacking the judiciary but the government will not stay silent,” Rijiju said in Jammu when asked about a reported threat by a Congress leader.
Congress president from Tamil Nadu’s Dindigul, Manikandan threatened to chop off the tongue of the judge who delivered the verdict to send “leader Rahul Gandhi to jail”. The Congress leader was heard saying in Tamil, “when we will come to power, we will chop off the tongue of the judge who delivered the verdict to send our leader Rahul Gandhi to jail.”
The Surat court judge had sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years imprisonment in a 2019 “Modi surname” defamation case. The conviction led to Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as a member of the Lok Sabha last month. “It is the habit of Congress (to issue threats against the judiciary). Even before the Emergency in 1975, its leaders attacked the judiciary and they will make further attacks because of their frustration,” the law minister alleged.
Rijiju said, “We’re followers of the Constitution and if they try to tear apart the Constitution, we won’t stay silent”. Home minister Amit Shah has rightly said a person linked to dynastic politics is in danger and not democracy, he said. Electronics Rajeev Chandrasekhar also criticised TN Congress for its leader’s comments.
