PATNA: A day after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge reached out to Bihar CM Nitish Kumar for opposition unity, the JD(U) on Saturday said it was the public opinion which is “compelling” the leaders of opposition parties to unite against the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
“The way the central agencies like Enforcement Directorate and CBI are being ‘misused’ by the Centre, the people of this country have made up their mind against the BJP. They want that leaders of all opposition parties come under one umbrella to dethrone the BJP in the next general election,” JD(U) national general secretary and spokesperson Rajib Ranjan told TOI over the phone from Delhi on Saturday
Hailing Kharge’s telephonic talk with Nitish and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, Ranjan said the Congress president has now set the ball rolling for the unity among the opposition parties and it would be visible in the next two months. Ranjan added almost all non-BJP opposition parties across the country want unity and they were now inching towards a unity at the national level.
The JD(U) spokesperson also pointed out that Nitish had repeatedly said that he was waiting for a response from the Congress leadership on the issue of opposition unity. “Now, the Congress has responded positively, and we welcome the Congress’ move,” he said.
