THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Vanchiyoor police on Saturday registered 15 more cases in BSNL Engineers Cooperative Society fraud. With the new cases, the total number of cases registered so far has become 559.

Police recently transferred 534 cases to the special investigation team of economic offence wing (EOW) of the crime branch and it was informed that the process is on for transferring the new cases as well.

The cases are registered against AR Gopinathan Nair, president of the society, KV Pradeep, secretary, Rajeev, staff, and other administrative members under sections of the IPC 408 and 409 for criminal breach of trust, 420 for cheating and 34 for criminal acts done by more than one person.

The crime branch special team was earlier probing just one case registered on the basis of the complaint of the joint registrar of the cooperative societies. However, the state police chief directed the city police to hand over all the cases to the special team. “More and more people are coming up with complaints every day. It clearly indicates the vastness of the crime as only a tip of an iceberg might have come out so far. The real gravity of the case will be known through a proper investigation,” said the police.

DSP Sajad, head of the investigating team, said, “The investigation has been progressing effectively and all will be ensured justice.”

The fraud came to light when some depositors were denied money when they tried to withdraw their deposits. In the preliminary inquiry conducted by the co-operative department, a fraud worth Rs 44 crores was reported.
