Rajkot: A special GujCTOC court of Rajkot issued a contempt of court notice to land mafia Jayesh Patel’s daughter Jal Patel, who was allegedly found distributing pamphlets in Jamnagar disclosing names of witnesses in the case where her father is the prime accused.
The court issued show cause notice after the Jamnagar police informed the court through an application stating her action was contemptuous. S K Vora, special public prosecutor (SPP) in this case said, “A case was registered in the special court of Rajkot under GujCTOC against Jayesh Patel and his 15 aides. After completion of remand the court on October 28, 2020 passed an order prohibiting disclosure of identity of the witnesses in this case. Jal Patel, daughter of Jayesh Patel was found distributing pamphlets disclosing the names of some of the witnesses.”
The investigation officer in the case submitted an application of contempt of court through the SPP. On Friday, the district and sessions judge of Rajkot, U T Desai, issued a show cause notice to Jal Patel asking her why the court should not initiate contempt proceedings against her. According to sources, in the pamphlet Jal was demanding investigation of the witnesses too while accusing the police that they had wrongly framed her father.
Superintendent of police, Jamnagar, Premsukh Delu said, “It was an attempt to scare the witnesses. Disclosing witnesses’ identity is a contempt of court’s order and we came to know about it and we informed the court.”
There are over 100 witnesses in the case, of which Jal had allegedly disclosed a few names. According to the police, Jayesh Patel’s wife Dhruti gave an advertisement in a local newspaper six months ago with the same content disclosing the names of witnesses. The court had also issued contempt of court's notice then, after which she apologised before the court and the court dropped further proceedings.
Jayesh Patel is wanted in over 40 cases including forgery, extortion, cheating, murder etc. He was arrested in March 2021 in Britain, based on information provided by Jamnagar police. He was recently cleared for extradition to India by a court in London. Jamnagar police booked 16 accused in this case, of whom 12 have been arrested.
