Bhubaneswar: Around 10 more elective subjects and over 10 subjects for skill enhancement will be added to the revised model syllabus for undergraduate (UG) courses in state colleges. The higher education department is in the process of finalising the framework for revision of the existing model syllabus.
Model syllabus was prepared in 2019 for Plus III (UG) arts, science, commerce and management to have a
common curriculum for all degree and autonomous colleges. Odisha State Higher Education Council (OSHEC), the mentor of this programme, had set a target to change the syllabus in 2022 or 2023.
Official sources said the revised syllabus will be prepared keeping the National Education Policy (NEP) in mind. “There will be more electives so that a student can get a variety of subjects to add to his/her core subjects. He/she will have one or two main papers with electives and skill subjects,” said an OSHEC official.
Value added subjects like environment, sustainability and disaster management and ‘My India’ and ‘My State’ will be added. Skill enhancement subjects include quantitative method and logical reasoning, elementary mathematics, data handling, computer 3D graphics, ability enhancement in communication, and others.
“We are adding these electives, skill and value-added subjects to improve the employability of students. Apart from this, we can improve the knowledge quotient and basic understanding of the students so that they can continue higher studies and research works,” said the senior official.
