Constable on way to Kolkata police station hit by truck, dies

KOLKATA: A 47-year-old Kolkata Police constable lost his life barely metres from the Thakurpukur police station while heading there to report for work on Saturday morning.
The cop - Sisir Mondal - a resident of Parnasree Pally where he stayed with his wife and two children and hailing from Ratua in Malda - was hit by a 12-wheel sand-laden truck around 6.13am on Diamond Harbour Road.

Police said Mondal was trying to take a right turn from the Joka-bound flank towards the Thakurpukur PS (located on the Behala Chowrasta-bound flank) when the incident took place. The cop had been assigned the duty of guarding former Indian skipper and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly's residence for which he had come to collect his arms.
"We studied the CCTV footage multiple times. It shows the constable wearing a helmet on a bike travelling towards the police station. The truck that was behind grazed the bike from behind. Mandal was flung off the two-wheeler. Though the bike did not suffer much damage, Mondal may have suffered internal injuries that proved fatal," said an officer.

The driver initially sped away but eventually dumped the truck a few hundred metres ahead and fled. The helper has been detained.
Mondal was rushed to a nearby nursing home where first aid was provided. The cop was still alive at this point, claimed cops. However, with no critical trauma care facility here, Mondal was removed to Vidyasagar Hospital in Behala. He was declared dead on arrival.
"Constable Mondal suffered severe multiple injuries in an accident with a truck and was declared brought dead at Vidyasagar State General Hospital," said DC (Behala) Saumya Roy.
The top brass has ordered a probe by the fatal squad of Kolkata traffic cops. "Prima facie, it seems that the truck driver had not seen the cop take the right turn. We have found no major external or bleeding injury on the victim's body. There were only some scratches near the elbow. He might have died due to internal injuries or sheer trauma after the incident leading to a heart attack," an officer said.
