Margao: The Cuncolim police on Sunday arrested a 24-year-old Karnataka resident, Rachita Kumar, in connection with a hit-and-run case after 64-year-old Santana Fernandes succumbed to her accident injuries in a hospital.

Another person, who sustained injuries in the accident, is undergoing treatment in the hospital.

Informing about the accident that occurred on Sunday, the Cuncolim police said the accused drove a car in a rash and negligent manner and dashed it on an oncoming scooter while overtaking a bus at Balli.

With the impact of the collision, 44-year-old Minguel Fernandes lost control over his scooter and fell on the ground. The deceased, who was riding pillion, also sustained grievous injuries. Both the injured persons were rushed to the Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim. However, the pillion rider died while undergoing treatment.

Police said the accused escaped from the accident spot without informing the authorities. They said they, however, managed to trace the damaged vehicle following which the accused was later arrested.

Cuncolim police have registered a case against the car driver under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. Further investigations are in progress.
