Why We Love College Sports

‘The appeal of college athletics is that universities compete against one another.’

In William McGurn’s “Tell the NCAA to Buzz Off” (Main Street, March 28), he writes that the appeal of college athletics is “the idea that the guy wearing the jersey is a student like everyone else.” I disagree. The appeal of college athletics is that universities compete against one another. The player merely represents the school. The reality is that college athletes, especially football and basketball players, are mostly segregated from the rest of the student body due to their rigorous training regimens.
