Road closures ahead: $2.4 million project kicks off on Griswold Monday

Weather permitting, the city of Port Huron is slated to begin construction along Griswold Street between Military and 24th streets on Monday.
According to the city, the roadway, a state trunkline as the Interstate 69 business loop, will be closed to through traffic between Sixth and 16th streets for a water main replacement portion part of the work.
That piece of the project will last until September, while broader Griswold construction is expected to last until November.
The $2.4 million project also includes mill-and-fill resurfacing and is in partnership with the Michigan Department of Transportation. The state agency is contributing roughly $344,000 to the mill and fill, while the city is manning the 4,500 of water main with its funding coming out of local water, sewer, and streets funds.
Last year, Public Works Director Eric Witter said the city had originally budgeted $900,000 for their portion, but that water main costs went up about 30% than estimated.
Parking in the north lane of Griswold from Sixth to 16th will be prohibited during its closure of the area in order to maintain local access to properties and facilitate construction, according to the city.
