Martyr’s daughter to be first Haryana woman to become colonel

HISAR: Lieutenant Colonel Suman Kumari, daughter of Naik Om Prakash Dhul, who was martyred during Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka about 36 years ago, is set to become the first woman from Haryana and the first student of Navodaya Schools across India to be promoted to the rank of colonel. Suman was commissioned in the Army nearly 20 years ago.
Suman is posted in Panagarh, West Bengal. Her husband, Bhupesh Saharan, a resident of Kumbha village of Hisar, is also a Colonel and is posted in Chandigarh.
Lt Col Suman Saharan’s family said her father, a resident of Mundhal village, was martyred during the Sri Lankan operations in 1987 and the government had accorded the martyr status to him.
After her father’s martyrdom, Suman’s mother moved to Ghirai village with her two daughters and a son. Meanwhile, Suman got admission in Navodaya School at Pabra and on September 6, 2003, she was commissioned in the Army. Suman’s sister and brother work in the Haryana government.
Suman and Bhupesh Saharan’s son is studying in Class X, while their daughter is in Class V.
