When fire tore through a migrant holding facility in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, on March 27, many inside didn’t stand a chance. A security-camera video shows a detainee trying to kick open a cell door as the flames spread. Guards put their heads down and walked away. When the smoke cleared, 38 were dead. More than 20 were hospitalized in serious or critical condition.

This is only the latest migrant catastrophe along the U.S.-Mexico border. According to U.S. government data, at least 800 people lost their lives trying to cross the border in fiscal 2022. That doesn’t count those who died farther away during the dangerous journey from their homelands in South or Central America and beyond.
