Memories of and Thanks for the Print Edition

‘Our daily copy of the Long Island Press, which folded in 1977, was delivered on bicycle by one Donald J. Trump.’

The lessons I learned while delivering papers have served me well for 60 years (“When Boys, Not Phones, Delivered the News” by Bob Greene, op-ed, April 4). Being a paperboy was my first experience running my own business. I had to find customers and get them to pay me. I had to handle inventory, keep track of what was owed and decide if I wanted to continue to deliver to that person who never seemed to have the money. I learned that good service yielded more customers and tips. My bicycle had to be maintained, and that required budgeting for a flat tire.

Once, a fruit picker left town without paying, but a couple of months later, when the next crop needed harvesting, he found me and made a full payment, plus a nice tip. Meanwhile, a business owner stiffed me $1.80 for a month’s worth of papers. Give me the transient laborer any day.
