In contrast to a spell of heavy rain on Sunday, the city will see light showers on Monday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted. Heavy rain caused power outages and waterlogging in many parts of the city.
The weather office recently issued a yellow warning for the city and other areas, indicating the possibility of heavy downpours. The incursion of moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal and high daytime temperatures were supposed to have triggered the spell of showers. The rain, meanwhile, led to a drop in the mercury levels in the city, as per officials.
Pimple Saudagar, Alandi, Bhosari, and Swargate among other areas were lashed by heavy showers on Sunday. Many commuters were caught unaware. Thunder and lightning were also reported in and around Pune during the evening. Till about 5.30 pm, Koregaon Park and Wadgaonsheri areas of the city reported 3 and 7 mm of rainfall, respectively.
Rural areas, like Khed and Ambegaon, recorded 1.5 mm of rainfall. The Shivajinagar area of the city reported 6.9 mm of rain.
Amid bad weather, power supply in Sinhagad Road, Hingne, Dattawadi, Ganeshmala, and other areas was disrupted, officials said. The Maharashtra Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) in a statement underlined the outages were caused because of trees falling on distribution lines. Engineers worked till 8 pm to ensure the connection was restored to all the affected areas.
The Alankar Theater sub-center of the company was also affected. This disrupted the power supply to the district collector’s office, central building, and other parts. However, the supply was restored within 40 minutes, as per the officials.
The city will continue to witness thunder and lighting on Monday, but with reduced intensity. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 37 degrees and the minimum temperature would be 19 degrees Celsius, officials said.
