Fresh Covid-19 cases in Chennai crossed the three digit mark on Friday when the city reported 101 of the 303 cases in Tamil Nadu. There were 1,530 active cases in the state including 497 in Chennai.
The weekly average test positivity rate in the state touched 5%. On Friday, Chennai which tested 985 people, had a test positivity close to 10%, followed by Chengalpet (9. 2%), Tiruvallur (9%), Coimbatore (8. 7%) andKanyakumari had 8. 6%. After Chennai, Chengalpet (29), Kanyakumari (26), Coimbatore (22) reported the highest number of cases. All but six districts reported new cases. Four international passengers – three from the UAE and one from Singapore — tested positive for the viral infection.
Health minister Ma Subramanian on Friday said the state will increase RT-PCR tests in the state from 4,000 to 11,000. “There’s no need to be scared. We are taking preventive measures to curb the spread. People should wear face masks, wash hands frequently and follow social distancing,” he said. Subramanian attended a virtual meeting convened by Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday. Tamil Nadu has 24,061 oxygen concentrators, 260 pressure swing adsorption plants, medical oxygen storagecapacity of 2,067 metric tonnes, besides the required beds and infrastructure, he said. A mock drill will be conducted at government hospitals on April 10 and 11 to check the preparedness to treat Covid patients.
The health minister said Tamil Nadu has successfully contained the spread of influenza. A total of 52, 568 fever camps were conducted across the state, benefitting 21,05,568 people. The fever camps have been able to help identify 11, 130 fever cases, he said.
